How to Hire a General Manager
A general manager, something that many agree is a necessity for any company. Often the backbone of your small business, or the leader of some of your most important departments, a general manager is an extremely important position to hire for. But how do you start this process?
Before launching into interviewing a wide range of candidates, start the process with these three things in mind on how to hire a new General Manager for your company.
What Do You Need?
You’ve established that you need to create a general manager position, or you have a vacancy, great! Your next step in this process is establishing what your needs are for this position. Do you want to hire them from within? Do they need to have certain accreditations or a background in something specific? These are the things that you need to figure out before you start shopping for candidates. It will allow for a more streamlined interview process, and ultimately have you end up with a better candidate pool.
Use a Recruitment Firm
After you have addressed what your needs for your General Manager are, you will start looking for candidates. This process can be very time consuming, especially for a role of this importance. Calling in the experts to help in your search can often be the key to success. The experts in this case are a recruiting firm. Recruiting firms will have extensive networks of people to reach out to and place in your candidate pool. Having a dedicated team out there looking for your perfect candidate will free up your time, or your HR team’s time, to really comb over the pool of candidates and make a better decision in the long run. Using an executive recruitment firm is a great example of working smarter, not harder.
Create a Plan of Action
After your recruitment firm has found you the perfect candidate, you need to prepare for their first day in the office. Even your most qualified and prepared candidate will sadly not be able to read everyone’s minds and know what is going on in the company. This is a step that can often slip through the cracks in the on-boarding of managerial level member of the company. Get together with your HR department and the team your candidate will be joining and discuss how to best introduce everything to your new leader. Allow this activity to help with camaraderie within your departments, and ultimately creating a better and stronger team.
